Victory for Estheticians and Cosmetologists: HB 5683 & 5684 Signed into Law!

We have exciting news to share—our bills, House Bill 5683 and House Bill 5684, have officially been signed into law!

On December 3, 2024, Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s office announced the signing in a recent press release, marking a significant win for estheticians, cosmetologists, and small businesses across the state.

What These Bills Mean for Estheticians & Cosmetologists

These new laws, sponsored by State Representative Tullio Liberati (D-Allen Park), give estheticians and cosmetologists greater flexibility in the services they can provide. By removing unnecessary red tape, these bills allow trained professionals to continue offering services they are fully qualified to perform—without restrictive barriers.

As Rep. Liberati stated:

“I’m happy to see this legislation being signed into law. This legislation will help to maintain a working status quo. Many estheticians already provide the services safeguarded in these bills, in a safe, sanitary and professional manner. There was no legitimate reason to prohibit continuation or to negatively impact their income and business.”

Supporting Small Businesses & Local Economies

This legislation is a huge step forward for the beauty and wellness industry. By ensuring that estheticians and cosmetologists can offer the services they have been trained for, these laws protect livelihoods, support small businesses, and contribute to local economic growth.

We are incredibly grateful for everyone who supported these bills, from industry professionals to advocates and lawmakers. Your voices helped push these reforms across the finish line, ensuring a brighter future for estheticians and cosmetologists throughout Michigan.

What’s Next?

With HB 5683 & HB 5684 now law, estheticians and cosmetologists can continue providing high-quality services without unnecessary restrictions. This victory reinforces the importance of advocacy and policy changes that support working professionals.

Thank you again for your dedication and support. Let’s continue working together to empower our industry!
